Zanthoxylum armatum DC. (Family: Rutaceae) is an aromatic, large shrub or small deciduous or semideciduous tree, widely distributed at the altitude of 1000-2400 m. It has been traditionally used for culinary and medicinal purposes. Fruits are a rich source of nutrients and minerals and contain bioactive compounds such as terpenoids, amides, fatty acids, coumarin, and phenolic compounds. Pharmacological activities such as antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, hepatoprotective, hypolipidemic, hypoglycemic, anti-inflammatory, cytotoxic, anti-spasmodic, antiviral, insecticidal, and piscicidal have been reported from the fruits of Z. armatum. This chapter provides detailed insights on the pharmacological activities, bioactive and nutritional composition, distribution, cultivation methods, traditional uses, market value, industrial products, and trade prospects of fruits of Z. armatum.
