Book Chapter Description

Nanotechnology has emerged as the fastest-growing area of research and development in diverse fields. The multiple applications of nanoparticles (NPs) enable them to be a versatile candidate for basic research to industrial applications. With the growing population and diminishing natural resources, food production and food security are other socioeconomic concerns on a global scale. Merging nanotechnology with the food industry will unequivocally address this issue to a certain extent. A wide range of NPs ranging from inorganic metal and metal oxides to organic and polymeric-based nanomaterials are frequently used for and applied in food production. A number of NPs have found their place in food packaging and formulation of supplements such as vitamins and nutrients. Later, NPs and nanotechnology are also applied in the field of crop production by enhancing soil fertility and soil health while maintaining sustainability. The aim of this chapter is to review the applicability of NPs in food production and food industry with a holistic approach for their current as well as future scope in these fields.
