Book Chapter Description

Neuronal migration is an essential process for mammalian nervous system development and involves three distinct phases: extension of the leading process, movement of the cell body, and retraction of the trailing process. Here, we review the characteristics of nuclear movements occurring during proliferation of neural stem cells and progenitors during neurogenesis and of those movements associated with a forward migration that depends on the centrosome and the dynein motor protein components in nucleokinesis and nuclear–centrosome coupling. We also discuss some signaling pathways that play an important role in controlling nuclear movements.
