Book Chapter Description

Our understanding of the cortical processing of speech has benefited from many years of neuropsychological investigations, which have identified the left posterior temporal lobe as a key area for the comprehension of speech. Recent developments in our understanding of auditory neurophysiology, as well as imaging the processing of speech in intact human brains, has extended this result, and suggest that speech is processed along different streams of processing cortically. This general anatomical framework can be used to integrate the findings from a variety of studies of the cortical processing for speech, at different levels of analysis.
