Article Description

Laser surface texturing is a relatively well-known technique for enhancing the surface topography of engineering materials. Lately, several surface texturing approaches like nanosecond, picosecond and femtosecond laser texturing have been adopted for surface modification and to study the deterministic behaviours of texturing patterns with different shapes and sizes. Due to superior texturing accuracy and flexibility, laser surface texturing has been used to enhance lubrication and wear behaviour, mechanical interlocking at coating substrate interface, and creating superhydrophobic surfaces. The present paper review aims to discuss the recently enhanced tribological aspects using laser surface texturing for engineering surfaces. This study has highlighted the different laser surface texturing processes and future directions of surface modification to enhanced adhesion bond strength in surface coatings, improved lubrication for surface contact, and fabrication of superhydrophobic surfaces.
