This article discusses the advantages and disadvantages of using cryopreserved semen in breeding programs. Included is a discussion of the basic principles of freezing cells in general, followed by a description of the techniques used to freeze stallion spermatozoa. Possible modifications of freezing protocol, which may improve cryopreservation of semen that does not survive cryopreservation well, also are discussed.
