Review Description
La intubación traqueal es un procedimiento esencial, incluso vital, en el marco de la anestesia general y de la reanimación en pediatría. Garantiza el control de las vías aéreas, que es un prerrequisito indispensable en estas dos situaciones. En los niños pequeños, debido a sus particularidades morfológicas, la evaluación, las referencias y las modalidades técnicas de la intubación difieren de las del adulto. Estas particularidades son muy marcadas antes del año de edad, pero siguen siendo significativas hasta los 5 años. Implican a las estructuras craneofaciales, bucales, faríngeas, laríngeas y traqueales. En este artículo se describen las diferencias morfológicas, así como la evolución de las vías respiratorias del niño pequeño, precisando sus consecuencias sobre la laringoscopia y la intubación. Se detallan tanto el material como los puntos técnicos de la intubación que es esencial conocer. Por tanto, es fundamental conocer las particularidades pediátricas para optimizar el tratamiento de las vías respiratorias y la intubación traqueal en pediatría.
