Article Description

This paper describes the synthesis and characterisation of Ru-based, water-soluble complexes [Ru(X)(Y)(TMC)] (X, Y = HO or OH; TMC = 1,4,8,11-tetramethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane) capable of behaving as colorimetric, water-soluble, dissolved N sensors. Unlike previous water-soluble N complexes, binding to N is both reversible and pH-switchable, i.e., binding can be switched on at high pHs and switched off at low pHs. Sensing can be performed at partial pressures of N as low as 0.01 MPa. © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2010.
