Article Description

The shape, size, and motility of an ardent biological cell was investigated using the Monte Carlo method. The cell was modeled as a ring polymer on the square lattice enclosing, polymerizing and depolymerizing actin networks. Various scaling laws relating the size of the model cell to the concentration of polymerized and unpolymerized actin molecules and the length of the enclosing membrane were established by using the simulation data. It was observed that the drift velocities, which characterized the motility of the cell, exhibited a maximum at a certain fraction of polymerized actin which agreed with physiological fraction.
