Article Description

Measurement of shear strength of a monolithic tungsten carbide was performed as a function of impact stress. Two possible mechanisms, one based on failure initiated in the shock front itself, and the other based on plasticity due to dislocation motion and generation were proposed. A leading ramp on all traces was correlated with porosity in the initial microstructure. The results show that the lateral stress increases and thus shear strength decreases behind the shock front.
