Article Description

We have made a high-resolution (0.12 eV) measurement of the electron energy-loss spectrum of the layered compound TiS2 for energy loss E in the range 0.5-150 eV. After subtracting the contribution of plural scattering, we performed a Kramers-Kronig analysis to obtain the dielectric function. The reflectivity and absorption coefficient calculated with this dielectric function are in good agreement with direct optical measurements. Comparing our results with the band-structure calculation of Zunger and Freeman, we find substantial agreement between observed peaks and the predicted energies of the allowed transitions. A detailed comparison with theory awaits a calculation of 2(E). © 1979 The American Physical Society.
