Article Description

A model Hamiltonian is obtained for the itinerant electrons in an elemental ferromagnetic metal, based on two-site interactions derivable from Coulomb fields. The energy parameters are expressed as matrix elements of ferromagnetic band states derived from local-density-functional theory. For a special case of the model, a single-orbital half-filled band, a systematic perturbation theory is developed for the elementary excitations. The character of the spin waves and Stoner modes is discussed. © 1979 The American Physical Society.
