L’arte e la letteratura dell’antico Egitto esprimono la visione del mondo, fortemente idealizzata, propria della classe dominante ma, essendo quella quasi esclusivamente maschile, sessualmente connotata. L’idea di bellezza fisica coltivata dalle élite maschili presenta sin dalle origini le caratteristiche di una eterna perfezione giovanile e, insieme, una rigida differenziazione di genere: l’ideale di bellezza femminile è sensuale, erotico, connesso ad un modello biologico di fertilità e atto a suscitare il desiderio maschile; viceversa l’immagine che l’uomo vuole trasmettere di sé irradia potere e capacità di soggiogare. I testi fanno da perfetta eco a questo ideale estetico. Solo con il regno della regina Hatshepsut (1479 -1458/57 a.C.), usurpatrice della carica regale, che la mitologia e l’ideologia faraonica assegnavano solo ad uomini, fa l’ingresso nell’arte egiziana un ideale di bellezza nuovo, improntato ad un modello di adolescenziale giovinezza in cui i tratti di genere sono ridotti al minimo. Un’analisi dei termini con cui l’antico egiziano espresse le diverse sfumature del bello completa il saggio.
