Review Description

Omphalocele and gastroschisis are 2 of the most common congenital abdominal wall defects. The 2 disorders vary widely in presentation, embryologic origin, and management. • Based on some research evidence as well as consensus (Level B), outcomes with omphalocele are excellent in the absence of any significant associated anomalies. (31)(32) • There is good evidence (Level A) that survival in gastroschisis exceeds 90%, with morbidity primarily in those with intestinal injury or atresia. (45)(46) • Based largely on mid-level evidence and a few randomized trials (Level B), there is general consensus regarding management of affected infants. (6)(17)(18) • Based on Level B evidence, a multidisciplinary, standardized approach to treatment can lead to excellent long-term outcomes. (57).
