Article Description

Orality is, doubtlessly, one of the most important aspects in the novel Grande Sertão: Veredas, and, in general, in João Guimarães Rosa's work. Despite the abundance of studies on this author and his work, orality remains a fertile ground for research, especially if approached from the aspect of translation bias. This is why we propose to analyze, in this work, the way in which French translators have tackled this topic in their translations. To do so, we will resort to the theories developed by Henri Meschonnic (1982; 1999) regarding oral and spoken forms, the study on oral speech in Grande Sertão: Veredas carried out by Souto Ward (1984), and the works organized by Michel Ballard in the compilation Oralité et Traduction (2001).
