Article Description

The aim of this article is to contribute to the historiography of the artistic context in Barcelona over the last few decades. To achieve this, the article takes the formation period of the Centre d'Art Santa Mònica (CASM) as a case study. The CASM was established as an art center in Barcelona between 2003 and 2007 following the "Kunsthalle" model. Through this case study, the author aims to establish the fit of the center in an institutional map dedicated to contemporary art that was under construction and development. The article also draws a parallel between the CASM and the international context of working on artistic production models before the 2008 crisis. Additionally, the article aims to historically place the model instituted by CASM in the origin of the debate on the need for an art center in Barcelona. The investigation is based on original sources and documents, reconstructing the history of CASM in relation to other parallel institutions in Barcelona. The article concludes with an analysis of the effects and consequences of political interference in the institutional context of art in the city.
