· Pasolini seen by Patti Smith · The verses and the figure of Pier Paolo Pasolini have repeatedly inspired the compositional gesture of many musicians of the Twentieth century and today. Starting from the works of Giovanna Marini to reach the productions of Giorgio Battistelli and Adriano Guarnieri, many authors have found in Pasolini a very precise point of reference for their poetics. The case of Patti Smith, the ‘muse of rock’, is very special. In fact, in Pasolini this musician found a very precise guide that allowed her to solve some problems she had faced since her youth. Her visits to Ostia, in 2018, and to the places of the poet’s Friulian spring, in 2015, testify to a particularly intense closeness to Pasolini. In the course of many interviews, she said that she appreciated Pasolini’s «lack of fear» which led him to approach and experiment with more languages and, above all, to be grateful to him for having made her discover the true face of Christ, far from the church and close to the poor. «The Gospel according to Matthew changed the perception I had of Jesus, at a time when I had decided to rebel against religion to affirm my identity. Pasolini showed me Jesus from another point of view, pointing to a revolutionary who was trying to change things». The image of the revolutionary Christ recalls the words with which Pasolini himself described his own film and the underlying equation that inspired the screenplay and the director’s choices. In the verses of Patti Smith the similarities with Pasolini’s poetry emerge repeatedly. Just think of his use of the word as an exploration of the real or of the sacredness of the real to which his texts invite us to consider. But it is even more interesting to see how rock, in all its complex and articulated facets, can be combined with Pasolini’s poetics apparently extraneous to this music.
