Conference Paper Description

The method of experimental determination of the surface catalytic recombination coefficient of ultra high temperature ceramics(ZrB+SiC) in dissociated subsonic air flows generated by a 1MW high frequency plasma wind tunnel of CARDC are discussed. The complex diagnostics of nonequilibrium plasma flow was also developed for calculating air flow field parameter in working chamber of HF-plasmatron. The UHTC samples tested was produced by hot pressing, and then machined into samples for catalytic measurement. The sample for the test is disk shape with 20mm diameter and 5mm thickness. One types of materials were tested under a subsonic condition with enthalpy of 16.5~25.6MJ/kg and ambient pressure of 5.4, 12.4, 22.4kPa.The recombination coefficient of ultra high temperature ceramics (UHTC) in the surface temperature range 1406~1622K were measured. It shows that the catalytic recombination coefficient of ultra high temperature ceramics under high surface temperature condition depends not only on the surface temperature but also on the partial pressure.
