Article Description

The Northern region of Brazil has lower development rates compared to other regions of the country. For this reason, specific public policies have been implemented in the region with the purpose of reducing socioeconomic inequalities and improving regional integration. In this context, the main objective of this research is to understand the effects of the public policy of Free Trade Areas (ftas) in the municipalities of the Brazilian Western Amazon. In particular, the impacts on various relevant socioeconomic variables and potential spillover effects on neighboring municipalities are analyzed using Exploratory Spatial Data Analysis techniques. The results show that per capita income increased in the fta municipalities, as well as at the national and Western Amazon levels. There are intra-regional differences in the impacts on socioeconomic variables, and overall, the public policy has contributed little to the socioeconomic development and regional integration of fta municipalities.
